Christopher Haviland is the Assistant Coach for the 2023-2024 season of the Fair Grove High School Girls Soccer team as well as being a 3rd grade teacher at Fair Grove Elementary.
Haviland is a Third Grade teacher in the Fair Grove Elementary School who has begun coaching for the High School Girls Soccer team. This is his first year coaching soccer as well as his first year teaching at Fair Grove Schools.
Prior to coaching the Girls Soccer team, Haviland was the Assistant Coach for the Fair Grove High School Boys Soccer team during their season from August to November. This is the second year of Haviland’s teaching career. Before teaching at Fair Grove, Haviland previously taught at Sherwood Elementary School in Springfield.
Haviland played soccer throughout his childhood. He mostly played on defense as a right defensive back or as a center back. “I have always loved the sport,” he said. He added that his favorite thing about soccer is, “how much of a team sport it is.”
Haviland’s goal as a coach is to grow the culture of Fair Grove’s soccer program. “We want a team that is hardworking, loves the game of soccer, and are always looking for ways to improve,” stated Haviland.
According to Riley Frazier (11), a member of the Girls Soccer team, Haviland has benefited the team by giving it genuine feedback. “He’s pushed me to be a better player by reassuring me when I make mistakes and uplifting me when I have really good moments in a game or practice,” added Frazier. She also explained that Haviland has good authority and knowledge as a coach.
The Girls Soccer team had offseason practice earlier this year. During practice they focused on conditioning and foot skills. They started the season with their first game on March 13th against Stover High School. Their most recent game was at home against Greenwood Laboratory School on April 15th.
Haviland continues to show the team and his students new ways to learn and gain experience in the classroom and on the field.
