On May 2nd, the Fair Grove 1st Graders performed a program about music in the 1950’s. Each year for 12 years the 1st graders would perform this program for families and guests.
This program was organized by Elementary School Music Teacher Heather Lumley. Songs such as Lollipop, Chantilly Lace, Splish Splash, Rockin’ Robin, The Twist, Teddy Bear, and Purple People Eater were performed and sung that night. Girls dressed in poodle skirts while the boys dressed in white shirts and jeans, really giving off the 50’s vibe.
One student, Wyatt Calton (1) said, “I had a lot of fun dancing,” said Calton, “dressing up was fun too.” Starting in January, the students would come and practice with Lumley once a week. She would teach them the lyrics and dances to each song as well as helping them with their speaking parts. “The kids have a ball learning these songs and performing them for their parents and grandparents,” said Lumley.
During the program each student would receive a speaking part. Some were spoken to introduce the next song while others were spoken for comedic purposes. Some students performed with costumes or stage props. For example, Lollipop was performed with a few girls with inflatable lollipops, dancing along with the song. Another instance happened with The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Purple People Eater where two students dressed in costumes to represent the songs.
During one point of the program the song Twist was performed, encouraging the teachers and the audience to perform the iconic dance move The Twist. “I love this whole program. It is probably my favorite of all times,” voiced Lumley.
After the program, parents and kids could take pictures with a 1955 Chevy that was provided by Lumley’s husband. “I got really nervous when I had to speak in the microphone,” stated Calton, “But I really enjoyed it.” The 1955’s was full of music. Bringing it back through a program gave parents and grandparents the opportunity to enjoy the sound of the past and seeing their kids perform.
