The Fair Grove Jazz band performed at Monroe Coffee Co. on April 21st from 1 to 3pm. This was a way for the community to enjoy a cup of coffee and jazz.
Natalie Palomo, director of the high school band, stated, “Something about jazz and coffee just feels right. What better way to relax than grabbing a cup of joe and enjoying some live music.” Palomo has been practicing with her Jazz students all year for this event.
Keith Nolan (10), a part of the Jazz band, stated, “We have been preparing for this event all year. We have been practicing since very early on, compiling multiple other events into one with all of our songs. We practiced every Tuesday and Thursday during advisory.”
Nolan also went on to say, “I love Java and Jazz. It is a super fun event where we get to show the community what we are capable of without them having to pay. It is also an amazing way to plug Monroe House and what their shop is like.”
Palomo hopes that next year she can do this event again with the Jazz band and that Monroe house will want them back. She stated, “I love the casual atmosphere. The kids can chat a bit between pieces, we get to try some new improv stuff, and we’re right there with the “audience,” so it’s a very cozy, casual way to perform.”
Nolan added to this by stating, “Jazz is my favorite way to express myself. By having the opportunity to do a solo, I am able to put myself into the music itself.” Nolan also encourages students to try Jazz band. He said, “I would say to do it! They’ll have to work hard, but it is all worth it!”
The Jazz band wrapped up for the year and had their last event where they performed at Fine Arts Night on May 10th.
