The Fair Grove Elementary hosted their 6th annual “Make It Take It Night” on Tuesday, December 9th. Parents brought their children (Grades K-4) to the Elementary cafeteria to decorate cookies and make ornaments. Students adorned their cookies with icing and sprinkles, and continued on to make their ornaments afterwards. Parents both helped and observed as their children made different crafts.

“The purpose behind this was to get parents involved in school, and to have something fun for the kids to do,” states Dr. Sims, head of Make It Take It Night, “We usually get about 75 to 100 kids to show up, along with their parents.”

Parents as Teachers (PAT), was also involved in Make It Take It Night. They work with prenatal children on up to kindergarten. “We work on developmental skills and do developmental screenings,” says Tammy Lucas, Parents as Teachers member. “It’s free entry for any child from birth on up to kindergarten.” Parents as Teachers was the original group behind Make It Take It Night. They hosted it for any child in their program. It wasn’t until recently that the school opened it up to the whole elementary.

Additionally, the kids who attended Make It Take It Night got to take home a book of their choice. As they walked in, they chose from a number of selections, including: The Magic Tree House, Ready Freddy, Geronimo Stilton, and a number of other childrens books. In the library, Michelle Cannefax read with any child who wanted their book read to them.

“My favorite part was putting the icing on the cookies,” says Brady Towry, a first grader at Fair Grove Elementary.

Make It Take It Night gave parents the opportunity to spend time with their children in a fun and exciting way. Each kid left with cookies mounted with sugar, and with a new ornament for their tree.
