FTA (Future Teachers of America) helped PTO put on a Parents’ Night Out on Friday December 5th from 6 to 9:30 pm. This night was to give parents a chance to have their kids watched by trusted PTO parent volunteers and FTA students. While this helps out the parents, FTA members are also getting volunteer time and interaction with kids.

The kids were split into three groups by grade, and then put into different activity rooms with fifteen FTA members. The Pre-K and Kindergarten group started in the lower gym. Sierra Riggs (11) worked this room watching and instructing kids on the rock wall. Riggs commented, “My favorite part was talking with Pearl and Claire. They are so sweet!” Another group was First and Second grade. This group started in the game room where they could watch a movie, or play games like Battleship and Twister. The other group was made up of Third through Fifth graders who started in the upper gym. Jacob Buckner (9) stated, “ I was in the upper gym the whole evening and we played dodgeball, musical chairs, Pac Man Tag, Duck Duck goose and more.”

PTO provided pizza for the kids to eat. All of the groups came together to eat their pizza and enjoy apple juice, fruit punch or blue Kool Aid. Later in the night  FTA members provided different snacks, like goldfish and animal crackers.

Mrs. Mauldin is one of the FTA sponsors. She commented, “FTA is both a service organization and a leadership training ground. We get the opportunity to use both skills at Parents’ Night Out.” Mauldin says she enjoys watching the teens interact with the little kids playing board games, legos, and using dodgeballs in the gym. Mauldin also stated, “Some of the teenagers are natural born leaders and it really shines through.”
