Fair Grove Middle School’s Scholar Bowl is currently preparing for two upcoming trivia conferences. They meet every Thursday morning at 7:50 through advisory, to practice their trivia knowledge. Scholar Bowl members gather into teams, and buzz in with the answer. The trivia questions range anywhere from geography to pop culture. Scholar Bowl is composed mostly of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

“We answer trivia questions about history and other things,” says Garrett Love (8), one of Scholar Bowl’s top scorers. “My favorite part of Scholar Bowl is getting to hang out with my friends and answering questions.” Garrett has won multiple awards in different conference tournaments.

For tournaments, students are grouped in teams of 6 to 8, then paired with a team from another school to answer a quick round of questions. After that stage, groups are moved to another room and are asked to answer a second round of trivia. Depending on who wins, will determine who the teams go up against next. Also, the number of schools will depend on the number of rounds. Eventually, after the majority of the groups have been eliminated, two are left. After both of those teams answer a series of questions, there is a bonus round. This gives the losing team the opportunity to pull ahead. At the end of it all, one team is crowned.

“Last year we placed 2nd in the Strafford tournament, and won 1st place at Conference,” says Chanda Lemon, Scholar Bowl director. “This year, Fair Grove will be hosting the conference tournament.”

The Middle School Scholar’s Bowl has bee preparing for two competitions since before Christmas break. The first tournament is held at Strafford, January 31st. The second will take place here in Fair Grove, on February 7th.
