The Fair Grove high school came together for the annual assembly on November 11 at 9:30 a.m. to honor veterans and their services to the United States. The students and teachers took an hour out of their regular schedules to gather in the high school gymnasium and learn about the sacrifices that our veterans had to endure to keep our citizens safe and free. A lot of different people participated in the assembly and gave their respect to the veterans.

The high school choir honored the veterans by opening the assembly with the Star Spangled Banner. The choir performed two pieces that they had been practicing for a full month. The pieces were called, “Blades of Grass and Pure White Stones”, and the “National Anthem”. The Singing Eagles also participated in the assembly by singing “Thank You Soldiers”.

The high school band honored the veterans by playing “Taps” as the audience had a moment of silence for all of the fallen veterans. They also played the “Military Salute,” which included the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, and Coast Guard theme songs. As each unit’s theme song was played, the veterans who served in that unit stood up so the audience could recognize them for their service.

Two middle school students, Anna Johnston and Lauren Kennard, gave a speech about why Veterans’ Day was important to them. “It’s nice to know that the young people can now understand some of the sacrifices the veterans had to go through, because it’s hard for even adults to comprehend,” added Carl Carpenter, a Marine Corps veteran.
The guest speaker for the assembly this year was someone familiar to the student body. Mrs. Mauldin’s husband, Colonel Mauldin, gave a speech over the sacrifices that not only the men and women make when they serve, but also their families. He taught the students that it’s not only the men in service that pay the price for freedom and security, but their families as well. He told the audience that just saying thank you to someone who served means the world to them.
The Fair Grove high school appreciates the veterans dedication to their country and the people in it.
