Movie Review: The Martian

I don’t really like movies. I just don’t really see the point in going to a room with big couches and paying to sit and spend two or three hours of your life, just staring at a screen. You can even buy popcorn that runs at the totally inexpensive price of a dollar per kernel. They all act like it’s so cheap, “Oh do you want some candy or a large drink with that? It will only cost your rent for the month.” They’re probably only nice because they sneak a piece of popcorn from each person’s bucket. But anyways, I went and saw The Martian and my entire pessimistic paragraph is now negated.
Matt Damon stars in this attention grabbing movie along with other relatively famous people such as: Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels and even the lead of Childish Gambino, Donald Glover. Matt Damon, also known as Mark Watney, joins his crew in an exploratory mission to Mars. A storm that was previously said to be fine turns into not so fine and causes the crew to evacuate the planet early. Mark Watney is too far from the shuttle and gets left behind in this storm due to his crew thinking that he is dead. Once the storm passes he wakes up from unconsciousness and realizes that he’s alive. Watney has to figure out how to live for 4 years with only a small living quarter built by NASA, a rover that only travels a couple miles before needing charged, and a food supply to last for a year. I could keep going but then the movie would probably be ruined.
I hate movies. But this movie was so good that I went back to the place of the overpriced food items and watched it again. Matt Damon does an incredible job portraying his stressed out character but at the same time is very good at cracking a joke at all the right times. The Martian hopped right on up into my list of top 5 movies. 9.5/10
