Fair Grove’s FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America), hosted a book drive from December 7-15, in which students brought in new or used books for Preschool children and on up to the 4th grade level. The drive consisted of a point system, with new books at three points, lightly used books at two points, and well worn books at one. In all, the book drive collected over 200 books, and 408 points.

“We wanted to give back to our community by donating books to the younger kids, which included the Little School, the Elementary, and Head Start,” mentioned Kaitlyn Spracklen, Vice President of FCCLA. “I learned that sometimes the community needs our help, and all you need to do is ask to know what needs to be done.”

Instead of just bringing in books and donating them, a competition was held between advisory classes. To motivate the classes, they were told that whoever brought in the most books and earned the most points, would be rewarded with a donut party. The advisory class that came in first place was Mrs. Beller’s class with 144 points, second place was Mr. VanCleave’s class with 130 points, third was Mrs. Holland’s class with 73 points, Mrs. Kisling’s class came in fourth with 47 points, and Mrs. Hamlet’s class came in fifth with 14. Once students return to school from Christmas break, Mrs. Beller’s class will be rewarded with their donut party for earning the most points.

Darci Friberg, the head of FCCLA, explains, “The most fun part was seeing the books come in, and we’re looking forward to delivering them. After the break, we are going to figure out what we have and we also have a little bit of money to spend, which we’ll use to buy some more books and deliver them.”

Friberg also mentioned that she hopes that by providing reading materials for classrooms, that literacy awareness will be increased, and that children will be encouraged to read more.
