Every year when the month of October comes around, local high school sports teams, have their athletes wear pink as a way to spread awareness for breast cancer. One sport that comes across most everyone’s mind is football, but that’s not the only team that wears pink. You can find other sports, like volleyball, participating in wearing pink throughout October.

At Friday night football games, you can find the football players wearing pink in many different ways. William Mcmains told of the different things the football team does to bring awareness, “Some of the things the players would wear is pink socks, undershirts, and sleeves.” The football team is one of the main sport teams in Fair Grove that wears pink to participate in breast cancer awareness month, but this doesn’t mean they are the only sport that wears pink.

Volleyball wears pink bows at one of their games to spread awareness of breast cancer. Maddie Clark (12), a member of the volleyball team, explained, “ I think we should bring more awareness to breast cancer, it affects a lot of people in the town. So we should try to support each other more.”  Fellow teammate Bailee Morgan (12), went through having her mom diagnosed with breast cancer. People who live in Fair Grove are fighting against breast cancer and, as it is a commonly diagnosed cancer among women, we try to spread more awareness on this so the women can get the help and support they need.

One person at Fair Grove high school who brings a lot of awareness to breast cancer is Griffin Merillat (12), by dying his hair pink for the month of October.

Samantha Armstrong’s (10) mother, Patty Armstrong, got breast cancer almost 6-8 years ago. This affected the family in a more positive way than expected, as Samantha explained, “ Well it brought us all together and made us realize how important family is,” she added, “Always tell your family you love them.” The breast cancer diagnosis brought the Armstrong family closer together and Mrs. Armstrong was able to push through and beat her cancer.

Cancer is a serious issue people are facing worldwide. Bringing awareness to breast cancer in high schools is a way for the students to get informed, and help the cause. Students and sports teams, not just at Fair Grove high school, are wearing pink during breast cancer awareness month to honor and respect those who are fighting against breast cancer.
