The freshman class at Fair Grove High School is experiencing all new things this year, especially since the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year has started.

Being a new underclassman means adapting to many changes. Christa Chumbley (9) discussed, “My first year of being a freshmen was at first another grade in my head, but now that I have been able to get the hang of classes it has been really fun and gives a lot more opportunities and has given me a lot more confidence.”

Chumbley went on, “My favorite part of being a freshman is having a lot more opportunities in high school than in middle school.”

Elliott Ackerson (9) talked about his favorite parts of freshman year so far as well, “My first year of high school has been good so far, I really enjoyed the football season. I love Coach Faubion’s American History class.”

There are many more things to enjoy about being a new-comer in high school. Aubrie Voorhis (9) said, “My favorite part of freshman year is definitely getting to have classes with my friends in other grades. I get to be with all my friends no matter what grade they are in. I also like lunch for the same reason. I enjoy getting to have lunch with everyone, unlike middle school.”

Voorhis continued, “My goal for the next semester is to keep good grades. Staying on top of my grades are very important to me because it teaches responsibility and helps with my future life goals.”

As she said, getting and maintaining good grades is important. Chumbley explained, “Changing from middle school to high school is such a big difference. It’s not more leeway, it’s ‘get your work done or suffer in your grades.’ It wasn’t much of a problem to get my mind where it needs to be in school when it comes to focusing on school work, but it was a little hard on the work we are required to do… My goals for the second semester are having straight A’s and succeeding in my extracurricular activities.”

Ackerson went on, “The change from middle school to highschool is something that can’t be taught. It’s a lot harder. You have more work and more strict rules, but you also are a little free in a sense. My biggest goal for the second semester is to have all A’s and B’s… I know my potential, I just have to reach it and try harder than the first semester.”

The freshman at Fair Grove continue on into the second semester of the school year, goals and ambitions held tight.
