The Fair Grove High School Boys 2024 soccer season has officially begun. With six games down, they are standing with a record of two wins and four losses.
On August 31st Fair Grove played Marshfield High School to secure their win with a score of two to one. Their next game was against Willard High School, which brought them their first loss of the season. The game against New Covenant Academy brought them their second win of the season, while Central handed them their second loss of the season.
Several of the players have a positive outlook on this season. Timothy Barber (10) stated,”I feel like this soccer season is going great. The team’s dedication to the sport is really great.” Devon Greek (11) added,”I feel like this season holds a lot of potential with new players and some fairly new coaches.”
Ryan Highstreet is taking on the role of head coach this year, as he did last year. Joining him again as assistant coach is Christopher Haviland. “Our head coach, Mr. Highstreet hasn’t had a whole lot of experience with coaching soccer, but he knows what we need as a team whether it be mentally or physically,” said Greek.
Many key players are returning this year. Barber states, “The players that have been leaders and star players are Jackson Anderson, Finn Harp, and Jacob Shurtz. They have been great at playing the ball and leading the team.”
There are many people who have taken leadership. Greek said, “Our team has a lot of good players as individuals but the players I consider to be the best on our team are the people that can play with the team and as an individual. One of the best is Owen Shlak. He is a Senior this year but he definitely won’t be forgotten. I see this year being our best year with new coaches and players.”
Both new and returning players are hopeful that all their preparations will propel them into winning the season. Owen Schlak (12) states, “We took a month out of the summer and did off season practices and workouts, we did some early morning weights during the spring.” Jacob Shurtz (10) aids,” We practiced everyday in July and having new freshmen joining us we have a lot more options to change up the field.”
The next game is at La Monte on September 21, starting at 2:00 pm.
