Fair Grove High Schools FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) club put on their third annual two day Cooking with Kids event on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024 and Thursday November 14th, 2024.
Darci Friberg, the FCCLA sponsor, spoke on the importance of this event for her FCCLA members. She said, “This event gave members first-hand experience in planning an event and working with children. Members tell me that it is one of their favorite activities of the year.” Friberg added, ¨Also, the money raised helps to support chapter activities and trips.¨
Cooking With Kids was a two hour hands-on event that occurred after school in the High School Family and Consumer Science (FACS) room. The kids created their own food as well as decorated aprons and chef hats. This year the kids made a savory pizza and a dessert pizza. The event cost $25 per kid; this covered all of their needed materials.
The event started out by having the kids choose their toppings for their savory and dessert pizza. FCCLA members then helped the kids create their own name tags. After that the kids had around 15 minutes of free time to color and decorate their aprons however they wanted.
While the kids were creating the aprons, other FCCLA members started to get all of the kids’ desired toppings prepared for them. Once everything was set the kids relocated into the FACS room and began flattening their dough for the pizzas. Once they were finished the FCCLA members put them in the ovens to cook. Once the pizzas were done, the kids were then able to enjoy them.
Greta Arnett (12) elaborated on some of the advantages of the event, ¨For FCCLA members, this event is beneficial to grow a better name for this extracurricular.¨ She added, ¨This event allows us to host kids and spread our name out there for future generations to be interested in joining FCCLA.¨
This is the third year that FCCLA has put on this event. Friberg said that the members had to create and distribute the flyers, go and buy supplies, and then work their station on the day of. Arnett added, ¨Having this activity in year’s past has definitely helped us. We understand the ins and outs of what it takes to make this event work.¨
