The Fair Grove National Honor Society (NHS) has been and will continue to go to the local Fair Grove Senior Center during lunch to eat with senior citizens.
NHS is a program for high schoolers in grades 11 and 12. According to the National Honor Society website, the goal of the program is to help shape students into leaders.
Amy Johnson, National Honor Society advisor, Fair Grove High School history teacher, and culture club sponsor said, “I have wanted to start something more local for NHS members to easily earn service hours. I know the local senior center is always looking for volunteers so it was an easy connection to make.”
Students drive to the Fair Grove Senior Center during lunch on school days. How populated the senior center is may vary. Johnson said, “Depends on the food they are serving – more show up on days with mashed potatoes. Every student I have talked to has had a blast at the luncheon and the food is delicious.”
Students started going to the senior center on 10/23/2024. Students only go to the senior center on Wednesdays of school weeks. National Honor Society member Carson Trussell (11) said, “I went to the senior center because I think it’s a great opportunity to meet some older residents of Fair Grove.”
At the senior center, students and senior citizens eat lunch and converse. Trussell said, “We all split up and sat at separate tables and ate some lunch while talking about their childhood or living in Fair Grove.”
A goal of sending students to the senior center is to strengthen the community. Johnson mentioned, “We are hoping to open a relationship between the Senior Citizens in our community and the youth. There is much to be learned from both sides.”
The National Honor Society is planned to send members to the senior center during school weeks until the end of the school year. Trussell said, “It is a great experience and I think people should do it if they have the chance.”
