The Fair Grove Singing Eagles is made up of third and fourth grade students. They are currently preparing for their performance on May 18th where they will sing ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ at the Springfield Cardinals game.
The students have early morning practice every Wednesday from 7:15 AM – 7:45 AM. Harmon is the choir director of the Singing Eagles in Elementary and teaches the Fair Grove High School Choir class.
Harmon recognized the difficulties of the young students practicing early in the morning. Harmon said, “It is early in the morning, so that in itself can be a struggle. But I think one of the other things I have seen them sometimes struggle with is reading the music. It is a difficult skill that they haven’t been taught yet, so learning how to read their music can be challenging for them.”
Though it is early in the morning, Harmon has noticed the positive attitude that the students bring each day. Harmon said, “They have really amazed me with their work ethic and their enthusiasm. They are always ready to learn a new song, and usually do so really quickly.”
The Singing Eagles started in October and have already had a few accomplishments. Harmon said, “For a group that started in October, they were able to put together not only a winter concert with just a few rehearsals, but also were able to go caroling as well. They never cease to amaze me at how quickly they will learn their music.”
Being a part of the Sining Eagles at a young age will then help the students in the future if they pursue being a part of the High School Choir. Harmon said, “They learn to read music, sing with good tone, and perform for audiences of all sizes and ages. Being in this group will also set them up to be members of the high school choir in the future.”
Harmon looks forward to Wednesday mornings each week to spend time rehearsing with the Singing Eagles. Harmon said, “I love starting my Wednesday mornings with them. We laugh, we sing and we just have fun each week. I love being able to work with them!”
Singing Eagles is open to all students in grades third through fourth grade. To join, the student must fill out a behavior contract and return it to Harmon.
