As the end of the school year approaches, spring sports are in full swing. High school baseball, softball, track and girls soccer have all been practicing and preparing themselves in the off season to be ready for this year’s spring season.
The baseball team has a record of 15-4. Head coach, William Reed, mentioned information about his players, “Our pitching staff has done a great job of throwing strikes and changing speeds. That has been the biggest reason for our success. Brock Boatwright (12) and Gavin Thomason (10) have led our pitching staff. They have pitched in big games and always give us a chance to win.”
Reed continued, “Offensively, Harrison Martin (10) is our leading hitter, with Gavin Thomason swinging the bat better lately. Macklen Johnson (11) leads us in walks and does a great job competing at the plate.”
Reed added, “Before games, our team has a similar warm up routine for each game. We try to get as many swings as we can in the batting cages and take quality ground ball reps to prepare defensively. The team has a superstitious routine that they often go through when doing their warm up. They do a good job of staying loose while getting ready to play.”
Softball team head coach, Bill Voorhis, has a lot to say about his team, “Our key players this season are our seniors Meadow Carter (12), Brooke Daniels (12), Gretta Morris (12), and Gracie Crandall (12).”
Voorhis continued about how they prepare for the games they play, “We spend a lot of time in the cages and hitting off the tee to focus and fix the little things about our swings.” Then later mentioned that their record was 14-3.
Jumping into track and field has had a lot of achievements this year. Lindsay Martin, a middle school science teacher as well as a high school track/ field coach, mentioned, “Our boys and girls athletes have broken countless school records and continue to do so each meet.”
Martin was asked about goals that she sets for her athletes and what approach she uses to try and reach their goals she stated, “We always set a goal for our kids to continue improvement in their respective area. Always be growing and striving to grow. Season wise we always want to be Conference Champs and qualify as many kids for State as possible.”
Throughout the year there has been improvements in leadership and performance on track, Martin followed up with, “ Honestly all of our seniors stand out for leadership by example in the areas of hard work, dedication and that turning into great success and performance. They’re a historic group of boys and girls!”
With the school year coming to an end and sports wrapping up with their season students have an opportunity to rise above and show their coaches what they have learned and practiced throughout the season.
