The Fair Grove High School boys soccer team kicked off its season with a winning record and a championship medal, for getting first place at the Marshfield tournament on August 29-30.
“We’re more offensive than we’ve been in years,” said boys soccer coach Ryan Highstreet. He credited the success so far to a mix of returning talent and growing leadership. Junior, Jacob Shurtz, a returning All State selection, has been a key player up top, along with sophomore, Tyler Whitehead. All while junior, Finn Harp, and senior, Jon Peak, carry the defense. Senior and Goalkeeper, Wes Hart, has also made a difference in the back.
Shurtz has his expectations for himself set high this year, “I want to score 30 goals,” he said. He continued, “And as a team, we want to go to state.” He and Harp take a leadership role on the field, helping their teammates through energy and encouragement.
Whitehead, now in his sophomore season, noted how the team has improved, “We’re a much better team offensively this year. I think we’ll score more and win more.” He’s focused on building confidence with the ball and pushing the team towards districts and beyond.
Junior Conner Ridingler believes the team’s growth goes beyond only talent. “We’ve really grown as a team, but also as friends,” he said, “That’s helped with communication and passing during games.”
When it comes to leadership, several players stand out. Whitehead shouted out senior Jesse Elliston as a motivator who leads by example in practice. Ridinger also pointed out Hart for keeping the team organized defensively, “He makes sure everyone’s in the right position and corrects us when we mess up.”
Highstreet emphasized that the players are very self motivated and work great together as a team. “They’ve put in the work. As a coach, you just need to put them in the right spots to succeed and know when to push and when not to,” he stated.
For younger players just getting started, the team’s advice is very clear. “Work hard and don’t be afraid to have the ball at your feet,” said Whitehead. Ridinger added, “Even if you’re good, be open to advice.” Shurtz kept it short and sweet, “Be humble.”
Boys soccer continues their season at home versus Greenwood on Tuesday, September 23 starting at 4:30 PM.
