A large handful of students, both in Fair Grove and all over the world, decide to get jobs over the summer break. There are many reasons people decide to do this including extra spending money, staying busy in their free time, building responsibility, etc.
Jackson Austin (12) is a student at Fair Grove High School and plans on working for L&S Elite Service this summer doing lawnwork such as mowing and tree trimming. Austin commented on his plan, “I chose the job because the people who own the company are family friends and they are providing me a job this summer before I go off to Boot Camp.”
During the summer of 2025, Elliott Ackerson (11) spent some of his free time working at Andy’s Frozen Custard, usually three to four times a week. Ackerson claimed he started working there in order to get some extra money and because his brother previously worked there, giving him a good reference. Ackerson said that he quit working there at the beginning of the school year simply to keep up with school work and track.
Applying oneself to a summer job can turn out to be quite the beneficial experience and can help young people develop life-long skills. Committing to doing something over the summer can help people mature and gain a good sense of responsibility. Ackerson commented on what he gained during his time at Andy’s last summer, “I loved working there; it gave a good experience with customer service and teamwork. It showed me how to work with others in stressful situations.”
Working with other people or doing a job for a specific person can also give the customer service exposure of having to compromise with others or the idea that the customer is always right. Austin explained, “…no matter how good you think it is or how perfect you think you’ve done on the yard there’s always something the customer wants and you have to fill their needs because ultimately it’s their yard and they’re paying you to do it.”
Austin commented, “I would definitely recommend doing a summer job because you’re gonna want to do things with friends that your mom and or dad won’t always pay for so you’ll need to earn the money somehow to do and buy the things you want.” Ackerson recommended a summer job because, “…it gives many life lessons and a good experience in a workplace that can be stressful.”
There are many benefits that come with getting a summer job and it can be a very rewarding and learning experience. There might be potential obstacles but that’s why it’s good to learn how to deal with that stress and responsibility at a younger age so people already have the skills when they need them in their adult lives.Â
