The Winter Games in the FEMA bulding

Fair Grove hosted their second Winter Games on Saturday, February 22.

The winter games are athletic events for special needs kids. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) run the project in Fair Groves FEMA building.  According to FBLA sponsor, Cayse Overstreet, preparation for the winter games takes a lot of work, “We have to contact local sponsors to help donate, we set up a fundraiser for the school district to get involved with and help create hype.”

Darin Oplotnik (12) has expressed great pride in the fact that he helps with winter games and he has great motivation, “Just helping the special needs program cause some of those kids can’t experience those athletic events and make it normal for them.” Oplotnik highly suggests that people get involved with the winter games because it helps in many ways, “It opened my mind cause you get more out of it then the kids do. In the end it’s just such a great experience.”

The winter games have a great effect on the kids and help them enjoy the events that they normally can’t do. The money that FBLA raised will go to the playground for new equipment for Fair Groves Special Education program.

Overstreet stated that her favorite part is, “Watching the faces of both special needs and high school participants… I love seeing the bond and friendship they create after.”

FBLA made around $3000 as a whole, which includes fundraising and the actual event itself. FBLA had the high school bring money for the games and whichever class raised the most would get a pineapple whip party for their 8th hour class. The school has many ideas for the playground including electrical equipment but all the equipment that will be bought is to be announced soon. Many of the students had fun and the majority have stated that they can’t wait to do it again. If you are interested in joining FBLA you can contact Overstreet or Jalen Supancic.
