The “Portrait of a Graduate” is an up-and-coming idea that has been spreading across many school districts for over a decade. Fair Grove district administrators took it upon themselves to create the “Portrait of an Eagle.”
The Portrait of an Eagle (POE) sets out a vision that defines the key skills, character traits, and abilities desired to be possessed by a student when graduating Fair Grove High School. Randie Roepke, Fair Grove High School Principal, who is leading the initiative, called the POE our district’s “North Star”.
He followed, “…guiding our work regardless of changes in curriculum, initiatives, mission, vision, or personnel. The POE creates a shared understanding of what we ultimately want for every student who walks our halls.”
The POE is meant to demonstrate the ideal vision of what is expected from students in the school district. It takes a few of the key characteristics, skills, and qualities. and wraps them together to create an image representing them. Roepke remarked, “…it will include a visual representation that students from kindergarten through 12th grade can easily recognize and understand. This visual component will serve as a daily reminder of the traits we are working to develop in every learner.”
Students will be able to see the POE displayed and it will remind them of the expectations that have been set. They will have clearly defined guidelines that will help them follow the path to success. Seeing it around will help to strengthen their sense of accountability and personal growth.
This portrait isn’t about making the school better or making it stick out more, it’s about clearly defining who Fair Grove is and the expectations. Chalise Shockley, Fair Grove School District Curriculum and Communications Director, expressed, “What sets us apart is our willingness to define our vision clearly and work together toward it. By focusing on what matters most for our students, we strengthen our identity and ensure we’re providing meaningful, purposeful learning experiences.”
Roepke added, “Our goal is for the Portrait of an Eagle to make us more intentional…This intentional focus strengthens our system and ensures that what we say we value is reflected in what we do.”
Overall, this project could help to bring the community together by distinctly identifying common goals and traits that are important in our community. Roepke mentioned how many Fair Grove families strongly support school initiatives. He said, “Many parents are already intentional about teaching these characteristics at home. The Portrait of an Eagle provides an opportunity to partner with families in an even more focused and collaborative way, reinforcing shared values between school and home.”
