At Fair Grove High School, students have created a girls’ golf petition in the hopes of sparking interest and establishing their own golf team.
In the past, Fair Grove has only had a boys’ golf team and the girls who participated in golf would play alongside them. There has not been just a girls’ golf team that is separate from the boys, hence the reason for the petition. Students have been collecting signatures from students who want to be a part of girls golf.
Kara Hart (9) is one of the students at Fair Grove High School who has started the girls’ golf petition. Hart explained the reasoning behind the petition, “We made this petition to hopefully be able to start a girls’ golf team not interlinked with the boys, just our own team and our own season.”
The girls’ golf season would start the same time as the boys’ season, which is in the spring. Hart explained that if a girls’ golf team was established, it would have a pre-season to help the players get the hang of playing the sport. In addition to practicing with the boys at the golf course in Buffalo, the pre-season workouts would provide the girls with more practice.
In order for a girls’ golf team to form there are some financial costs that need to go into the team. Fair Grove Athletic Director, Damon Seiger explained what some of the costs could entail, “Several factors including a coaching stipend along with a rental fee for the course that would be used to practice on.”
Another factor that would go into developing a girls’ golf team would be the amount of interest from students. Seiger also stated, “We are currently looking into the addition but no formal proposal has been made to the school board.”
Hart shared that there has already been some interest throughout the school in regard to the petition, “We have heard many student and non-student athletes hoping to get involved in golf because they feel like they could be really good at it and it would be a lot of fun.”
The petition is not only used to gather students who want to be involved in the girls’ golf team, but to bring more awareness to the cause. Hart said, “By helping get more people to know about our plans we hope to get some more players added to our list of future Fair Grove Girls Golfers!”
