On March 12th, the Fair Grove Elementary School hosted their Second Grade Music and Art Show, an event where students showed off their art projects throughout the night and performed their music program, “A T.V. Trip Through Time.”
The Second Grade Music Program has been going on for many years now, but the art show addition to that program has been new in recent years. With the art show addition, students are able to show off their artwork to their parents without having the fear of it getting destroyed after class on their way home. The artwork was displayed in the elementary lunch room for the parents to view before the music program.
Elementary Music Teacher Heather Lumley took time and effort to work with her students to help them learn all the songs for the program. Lumley explained, “We started practicing for this program when we came back from Christmas Break.” She continued, stating that they would practice every time the students came to her for their music special once a week. In addition, the week before the program they started holding practices with all the classes at once.
The students had four practices before the program, along with a full performance for the elementary during school hours the day of the program.
Leslie Johnston, a second grade teacher at Fair Grove, was one of the teachers whose class participated in the program. She commented that while the students practiced in music class for months, the only time she had to take part was for the daily unscheduled practices during the week of the program. Johnston stated, “They had to practice for just 45 minutes each day in the few days before the performance.” She continued, stating that it was not a big deal at all to her and that it didn’t really disrupt her teaching schedule.
The music performed during the program was derived from TV shows that aired during the earlier years of television, including some black and white productions. Many theme songs were sung during the performance, including, The Flintstones, Gilligan’s Island, The Adams Family, Scooby Doo, and the final song being “Thank You For Being A Friend”, from Golden Girls. Lumley stated, “The students seem to love these songs, and even enjoy going home to watch them on Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube.”
Lumley explained how each year she’s nervous about the performance, but every time students put their best foot forward and work together to perform an amazing show. Johnston stated, “Every year I am impressed with our programs. Our music teachers have always done an outstanding job planning and prepping for these events.”
The music performance was filmed, and is available to watch. The full performance is shown in the link below.
