The Fair Grove Band will be performing a band competition at Reeds Spring on October 28th. Natalie Palomo, the Fair Grove Band Director, will be leading the band through this upcoming corn hole tournament during the band competition.
Mrs. Palomo explained how this tournament came to be, “The tournament is for fun! One time, about five years ago, we brought some cornhole boards to a band competition to kill time, and the kids ended up being really competitive with it and made a draft and bracket and all of that.”
A cornhole tournament allows the band members to sign up for teams to compete against each other. Cornhole is a game where you throw fabric bean bags in an angled board with a hole with the goal of getting as many holes in ones as possible with the promise of prizes. Palomo said that the band uses the regular cornhole rules during the tournament.
Before the tournaments the band members sign up in pairs to compete. As for practicing, the band doesn’t prepare much. Stephanie Dunham (12), a senior band member, explained her preparations for the tournament, “Personally I haven’t done anything yet to prepare for this tournament. Although I have been in the tournament two times before this.” During Dunham’s sophomore year Dunham and Ricky Pierce (Former Student) were the tournament champions.
Dunham explained that his year’s competition will be one of many giving the band members something to look forward to during the stressful marching season in the future. She continued, “Along with that we have the cornhole tournament during down time at one of our competitions.”
The cornhole tournament is meant to be a fun social downtime activity. It brings the band together with competitive games for many to play. Last year’s winners were Ayden Teaster and Seth Hardison but this year’s tournament will determine if they get to repeat their success or not.
