The Fair Grove High School Band had four students audition on November 4th at Hillcrest High School for the South Central Missouri District Honor Band, competing to earn spots that showcase top student musicians across the region.
The Fair Grove Band Director Natalie Palomo stated that the District Honor Band consists of two large ensembles, the Concert Band and the Honor Band. Each group consists of approximately 100 students who are selected from schools throughout South Central Missouri District. The ensembles rehearse and perform under the direction of guest conductors and play high-quality literature using instruments.Â
In addition to the two large performing ensembles, the district also offers two jazz ensembles. These are both smaller groups who follow traditional jazz instrumentation.Â
This year, Fair Grove had four students audition for the Concert and Honor Band. Waylon Wright (12) and Lee Van Cleave (12) auditioned for the concert band, while Anderson Teaster (10) and Wyatt Barber (11) auditioned for the jazz band.Â
Palomo explained that students receive their audition music far in advance. They spend several weeks practicing independently before getting feedback. Palomo said, “Once they have had a chance to look it over, I’ll start listening to their preparation, and make sure they are doing their notes and rhythms accurately, and offering other advice.” The overall process requires a significant amount of practice outside of regular class time.Â
Barber, Van Cleave and Wright all made it as alternate options and could possibly have the chance to perform in the January or February concert.Â
Wright, who auditioned on baritone saxophone, stated his experience in the audition process, “It seemed like a really cool opportunity, and I had never done it before.”Â
The District Concert Bands will perform on January 17th at Nixa High School’s Performing Arts Center. The concert is expected to begin around five or six that evening. The District Jazz Bands will perform on February 14th at Parkview High School, starting around six that evening. The exact times have not yet been confirmed for either event.
