The National Honor Society (NHS), has already started the year helping out the school and community in many different ways. They are ready to complete their goal of providing for the community in the best way possible throughout the school year.
NHS is a national club run at the Fair Grove High School opened to any upperclassmen (11th and 12th graders), with a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Members of NHS are expected to complete many different things for the community. According to Mrs. Amy Johnson, the teacher sponsor behind NHS stated, “Students are expected to complete 15 service hours each year of membership.” Johnson also mentioned how they are expected to have outstanding student citizenship as well.
Joining NHS can have many benefits for upperclassmen and their future to come, as joining NHS can give upcoming graduates the chance to use NHS for their college applications and a possible scholarship for their future college. According to Luke Engel (12), a member of NHS described, “It has helped me win some favor with colleges, as it’s a good thing to have on your college resume. It could also help me be applicable for scholarships in the future.”
While the NHS can have an impact on a member’s future, it has also had an impact on the years they’ve been a member as well. NHS has given members a chance to give back to their community, or simply do a small gesture to make someone’s day brighter, Nolen Geitz (12), Secretary of NHS explained, “It’s not everyday that you get to serve other people in your community, or even just do a small gesture to make someone’s day better. It has taught me that even in the midst of playing sports and going through high school, I can always find time to give back to those in the community.” Riley Frazier (12), the Vice President of NHS also added, “NHS has made me more involved with the community, and made me realize the needs of others.”
NHS has many goals for this year to give back to the Fair Grove community in the best way possible. According to Mrs. Johnson, “We are looking forward to delivering pumpkins to the Fair Grove neighborhoods, volunteering at the Cystic Fibrosis walk, starting a relationship with the Fair Grove Senior Center, and continuing to provide snacks during advisory in the Eagle Nest Coffee Shop.”
NHS gives students the chance to give back to their community, while giving members benefits for their past and future lives to come.
