Fair Grove’s High School Choir started back up at the beginning of the school year. They have been practicing and perfecting their music for their upcoming concerts and shows, through the teaching of Audra Harmon.
Harmon, middle and high school music teacher at Fair Grove, has been teaching for 13 years. Harmon’s passion for music started early. “I have been singing since I started talking, so music has always been a part of me,” she explained.
Megan Bright (10), who has been singing since eighth grade, said, “I joined choir because as long as I can remember I’ve always loved to sing. I believe it is one of my many talents and gifts God has blessed me with.”
For Bright, the holiday caroling is one of the highlights of her year. “One of my favorite times is Christmas, because we get to go spread Christmas cheer by caroling all around Springfield,” she shared. Bright continued, “It’s always so fun to hear all our voices echo off the walls of the courthouse.”
Beyah Widner (10) gave Harmon and the choirs’ pianist, Cindy Sparks, credit for having such a positive atmosphere in the choir. “Mrs. Harmon is the best,” Widner said. “She makes it a blast and she is an amazing person to be around…” she continued. Widner added, “Same as our pianist Mrs.Sparks, she truly is a character. They make choir so much better.”
For many of the singers, choir isn’t just for singing, it’s an opportunity to build friendships and create memories. For students like Widner and Bright, choir has become their favorite class and activity in school.
Each year, the choir holds many events and performances, including the Veteran’s Day performance, the winter concert, the Evening of Jazz and the spring concert. Harmon stated, “…at our winter concert we sing the same song each year to close out the concert so it is very sentimental for me. I love the Evening of Jazz concert because it is music we typically don’t perform. And the spring concert is our senior’s last performance as a high school student and it is always a bittersweet moment for me.”
Widner continued, “My favorite part is probably concerts just because we all know the songs…” Bright shared, “I can’t even begin to express how electric and uplifting the room feels when all our voices blend together with such passion.”
Their next performance will be at the Senior Citizen Luncheon on November 21st.
