Before retiring, Tammy Lucas previously taught sixth grade, fifth grade, third grade, and Kindergarten for a total of 30 years at Fair Grove. Her daughter-in-law, Shelby Lucas, has followed in her footsteps and has been teaching Kindergarten for the past five years.
Tammy now serves part time at the Fair Grove Elementary School. She is the pre-K secretary and visits with kids ages 0-Kindergarten in the “Fair Grove Parents as Teachers”, a program that supports families in raising young children from prenatal through kindergarten entry.
Tammy retired four years ago. She said, “I retired to spend time and make memories with my grandbabies. It was a very hard decision because I love teaching, but it was so much easier knowing my daughter-in-law Shelby was following in my shoes in Kindergarten.”

Shelby chose to pursue teaching because she wanted to help educate, inspire, and guide her students. She loves teaching and chose to be at Fair Grove early on in her career for a multitude of reasons. One reason being that she grew up here and loved the small town vibe it gave. In addition she also student taught at Fair Grove Elementary with second grade teacher Michelle Graves.Â
Shelby shared, “When I made the decision to go to school to become an Early Childhood Educator, I knew that I wanted to come back to Fair Grove Schools to teach.” After she had finished her student teaching, she interviewed with Dr. Charity Hollan and got the job the following year.
According to Tammy is still very grateful to be a part of Fair Grove, through both her roles and her daughter-in-law. Shelby is involved with quite a few extracurricular activities through the school. She tutors students, hosts a room for the elementary school carnival, and participates in family fun nights.
Both Shelby and Tammy plan to continue supporting the Fair Grove school district in the future. Tammy expressed, “Once an eagle always an eagle!”.
