Fair Grove High School held its annual Veterans Day assembly on November 11th, inviting veterans, their families, and their friends to be recognized and thanked for their service.
The day began with a breakfast for veterans and their guests in the high school gym. Students and staff greeted visitors as they arrived. After breakfast, the assembly transitioned into several presentations honoring each branch of the U.S.A military. The high school band performed the service song for every branch, and the veterans stood when their song was played. The Fair Grove Elementary Singing Eagles also performed songs prepared to show appreciation for those who served.
Fair Grove Superintendent Christian Overstreet shared what Veteran’s Day means to him. He explained, “Veterans Day is a time to pause and reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made by the men and women who have served in our armed forces. To me, it’s about gratitude- taking a moment to thank those who have protected the freedoms we enjoy every day.”
U.S. Navy veteran Caleb Huff attended as the event’s speaker. He shared his experiences from his time in the Navy and offered advice about responsibility, perseverance, and serving a purpose greater than oneself. His presentation provided students with a direct perspective from someone who has served.
Two middle school students read essays written in their English classes. Their essays focused on what Veterans Day means to them and expressed their gratitude for the dedication shown by service members. Their participation highlighted the understanding of Veterans Day across all grade levels in the district.
Overstreet said, “My favorite part is seeing our students show such genuine respect and appreciation for the men and women who have served our country.”
Fair Grove Principal Randie Roepke noted that the most meaningful part of the morning for him was spending time speaking individually with veterans during breakfast. He stated that his goals for the assembly were for veterans to feel honored and for students to gain a deeper understanding of their service.
Overstreet stated, “It’s (Veterans Day) also a reminder of the values that unite us as Americans: courage, service, and commitment to something greater than ourselves. As an educator, I believe itś important for our students to understand that freedom isn’t free- it’s earned through the dedication and bravery of our veterans. Veterans Day allows us to honor their service and inspire our young people to live with the same sense of duty and respect.”
The 2025 assembly continued Fair Grove’s annual tradition of recognizing local veterans through music, student contributions, and shared moments of appreciation.
