On November 8th, 2023, the Fair Grove Elementary school took a trip to the Fair Grove Fire Station to learn more about the firefighters and about fire safety.

The kids from kindergarten through fourth grade learn about fire safety and what firefighters do when there is a fire. Third grade teacher Ms. Dani Kepler said, “The kids learn about fire precautions and safety measures they need to make if a fire were to happen.”

Taking safety precautions and knowing about fire safety is always important when a fire does happen to start. Kepler continued, “They learn about the training that the firefighters go through to get them ready in case of an emergency, and get to practice with an obstacle course.”

Kepler added, “The kids were shown all of the different equipment a firefighter wears and its purpose, while also observing what tools a fire truck has and their purpose.” This was at the fire truck where they listened to the chief and firefighters of the fire department speak about the tools in the fire truck.

When the kids had finished with the physical aspects of the day. They watched a video discussing more fire safety and what to do in an emergency. Some examples in case of a fire would be: have a plan, fire detectors in place, and they also practiced “stop, drop and roll,” while crawling through a tunnel. They were then shown blueprints of a house and used critical thinking to determine where the best exit would be if a fire broke out in the house.

They were taught that it is important to have a designated spot to meet when a fire happens. Whether that would be a tree several feet away from the house or a neighbor’s house. The kids were also taught that there should be a meeting location and then continue on with a head count along with calling 911.
