The 2024-2025 Fair Grove High School Scholar Bowl team has welcomed new underclassmen on the team, the team continues to grow and advance with the stride of the year coming to an end.
According to Michelle Walquist, Fair Grove Scholar Bowl Coach, illustrated the way things work. Fair Grove Scholar Bowl team consists of six people, three freshmen and three sophomores. This year since the scholar bowl team consists of all lower classmen, they focus on more game wins within the tournaments other than winning the tournament titles.
A scholar bowl game consists of two teams, from different schools, of four players with a buzzer system. There are 20 questions from a variety of topics and the first team to buzz in with the correct trivia answer on each question, then gets three more questions they can answer as a team.
Each part of the question is worth ten points. If the toss-up question is answered early, an additional five points can be earned.
The team has practices every Tuesday and Thursday, and they focus on the areas they need to improve on.
The goal for the scholar bowl team is that they need to focus on improving rather than winning tournaments. “With a team with all underclassmen we mostly worry about improving scores and winning games within the tournaments,” said Walquist, the scholar bowl coach for Fair Grove High.
Some of the students who joined before high school similar to Madison Crews (10) stated, “I joined scholar bowl in 7th grade because it was highly encouraged by my teachers.”
Everyone that is participating this year, has confirmed to re-join next year and have hopes to have the team grow in numbers. Abigail Barton (10), expressed, “I would like to encourage people to join it. Walquist is very kind and she would be so happy if anyone joined. If you like to learn facts, know things and compete, think about joining us.”
MSHSAA Scholar Bowl Districts occurred on April 12th in Houston, Missouri.
