When is it acceptable to start Christmas celebrations? Students and staff at Fair Grove High School debate whether Christmas should start after Halloween or after Thanksgiving.
Cinch Dowling (10) is one of many who choose to start celebrating as soon as possible, “Even though I believe Thanksgiving is important, I love Christmas and think it should be celebrated as long as it can.” Students shared their many family traditions that make Christmas enjoyable as well.
Olivia Broyles (9), on the other hand, thinks that celebrations should be postponed until closer to Christmas, “Decorating before Halloween is a big no. You should have the opportunity to still celebrate other holidays.”
Bailey Weaver, one of Fair Grove’s High School English Teachers, believes that celebrations should start the day after Thanksgiving. Weaver explained, “My mother’s late brother always decorated the day after Thanksgiving. It has become a family tradition ever since.”
Broyles did point out the fact that it can be stressful if you wait too long to start Christmas celebrations. She went on to explain that getting Christmas shopping done early for others is an exception to start celebrating Christamas early.
Some students think that starting early gives more time for fun Christmas Traditions. Dowling shared how fun playing white elephant with his family is every year. As a result of Dowling’s early celebration, he relaxes and enjoys Christmas much more.

In comparison, Broyles still has fun with her Christmas traditions with a shorter amount of time. Broyles expressed, “My family and I have a lot of Christmas traditions, but a few of my favorites are decorating gingerbread houses, going shopping for the angel tree families, and watching Elf on Christmas Eve.”
Weaver stated her favorite tradition is driving around looking at all the Christmas lights. Weaver added, “I love to make wassail. It is an apple cider drink with hints of orange, apple, and cinnamon.”
Another debate between peers is how long you should keep your decorations up after Christmas. Some believe the holiday season is over the day after Christmas. Others enjoy carrying on the Christmas spirit all the way until January.
Dowling argued that decorations should be taken down as soon as possible. On the other hand, Broyles thinks that they should be kept up a little longer to keep spirits up.
Broyles expressed, “My favorite holiday is definitely Christmas because I love all the traditions, and the overall feeling it brings me and others. Christmas time is always so joyful and I really enjoy all the traditions.”
