Future Businesses Leaders of America (FBLA) had their district competition on February 3rd. At districts students gave presentations on given subjects showcasing their knowledge for a set of judges.
Dylan George (12), the FBLA treasurer, explained how districts were ran, “FBLA districts is a two part event, the first part is competing – where you either roleplay or give a presentation on your topic in front of judges who grade both your knowledge on the topic and the quality of your performance and workshops, where you listen to Ted Talk-esque speakers talk about aspects of business and other topics.”
George continued, “The second part is the award ceremony where the top competitors in each topic go up on stage and receive awards for their placing based on test and performance results. I personally compete in events like entrepreneurship and marketing where I compete with a group in test taking and roleplay.”
Students that competed prepared their events thoroughly for the competition beforehand. Alexis Lepold (10), a student that competed at districts, stated that she had written all of her pre-judged aspects of her events including a cover letter and a resume.
Lepold added, “I also studied for tests and familiarized myself with the jargon related to my speaking event topics to help me in my interview.”
FBLA can have many benefits for students involved. Cinch Dowling (10), another student that competed at districts, stated that he was motivated to join FBLA to better himself as a student and overall individual.
George explained his favorite part of FBLA, “My favorite part of FBLA is the memories I make with my friends; there’s so many opportunities to go on fun field trips and create experiences while learning.”
Lepold added that her favorite part is competing. She explained that if you prepare thoroughly the experience can be fun and enjoyable.
Before districts Lepold described her goals for the competition, “I have two district FBLA events this year and my goal for FBLA districts is to make it to state in my future business leader event.”
Dowling added that he hoped to qualify for state in both of the events that he was competing in. He expressed that he expects to grow and have fun while there.
George stated that for his final year he wants to find success in his roleplay while competing. He added that he wants to have a blast in his final competition.
