With the third quarter coming to an end, seniors at Fair Grove High School are reflecting on their initial expectations upon entering high school and advice they wished to have received prior.
Leila Huff (12) explained that her expectations for high school were very high. She stated that she thought her high school experience would be like a movie. Huff said, “I wouldn’t say I was disappointed to find out that’s not how it works, but I slowly figured it out through the years”
Huff continued, stating she wished she would have let loose and been her goofy self all four years. She described that she finally mastered it this year, but in past years she valued being accepted more than being herself. Huff added, “I would’ve had so much more fun not caring what anyone else thought.”
Macklen Johnson (12) said he did not have many expectations for high school, he explained that he was just going to roll with the punches. Johnson stated that looking back he wished he had scheduled his classes to prepare him for his future career instead of trying to be with his friends.
Johnson added that he was glad he had joined clubs like FBLA/DECA (Future Business Leaders of America/Distributive Education Clubs of America) and NHS (National Honor Society), helping him be a more well rounded individual. Johnson said, “I’m just happy to be here, helping out the school in any way I can. I just take things one day at a time and the good Lord willing things will work out.”
Sofee Garrett (12) stated that she expected freshman year to be really intimidating. She thought the seniors would hate her and classes would be more demanding. She added that she wished she had been involved in more activities.
Garrett explained, “I knew I was gonna have to be more responsible, especially with school and sports season getting harder. I was glad I made new friendships and grew my fundamentals in sports.”
Gavin Brock (12) described that he was very eager to be involved with athletes across all grades and looked up to many seniors his freshman year. Brock said something he wished he had done differently is the relationships with the people around him. Brock would go back and be friendly and talkative with everyone so he could enjoy people’s interests.
Brock added, “I am glad that when I became a sophomore I joined the football team. There was a brotherhood more genuine than I had ever experienced in my life and I appreciate the life lessons that came from football.”
