The Fair Grove High School Student Council (STUCO) puts time and effort into planning and hosting assemblies for the entire high school student body to participate in.
Student Council students get together for a meeting around two weeks before an assembly occurs. Usually, the assemblies are planned in one advisory period. During this meeting, members discuss what the assembly will be about and the games students will play during the assembly.
Kharmah Wallace (10), a member of Student Council explained, “Assemblies are very simple to plan. In our meetings we discuss what activities will take place and who will be participating in them. Our choice of whose participation is usually based on our current in season sports.”
Wallace also mentioned that some assemblies are put together by the Fair Grove National Honor Society (NHS) or the High School Principal.
Michael Van Cleave, the Fair Grove Geometry, Applied Algebra 2, and Computer Science teacher, is the teacher sponsor of the Student Council. Van Cleave explained the times throughout the school year when STUCO hosts assemblies, “We always have spirit assemblies around homecoming and courtwarming, and traditionally have had one right before Winter Break.”
Alice McMains (11), a member of Student Council added, “We usually have ones at the end of semesters, and sometimes we have quarter ones since that’s when sports change so we can recognize people.”
Student Council aims to make each assembly a student-led event with having students speak and participate during the assembly. Addison Voorhis (11), another member of Student Council described, “We usually try to make it a student led thing, but if we need approval then we obviously involve the admin.”
Van Cleave added, “Admin usually gets the sound system set up for us before the assembly starts.”
STUCO hosts many assemblies throughout the year and with that comes a variety of games. This leads to many members having their personal favorites that students participate in.
Voorhis stated, “The mattress race is my favorite game that we do, it seems to be a big hit and is always fun to watch people scramble to try to beat the other team.
Wallace added, “My favorite assembly game would definitely be the wig snatch. I think it’s hilarious seeing the boys mess around the way they do.”
Wallace explained the experience that Student Council brings to members and students, “STUCO is a very fun experience. Assemblies are only as fun as our students make them.”
The Fair Grove High School Student Council puts time and effort into planning assemblies that not only everyone can participate in, but have fun and learn about the upcoming Fair Grove events in the process.
